Towards Pentecost 3: The Ascension

TOWARDS PENTECOST 160 x 160 image

Traditionally in the Church, a novena is prayed in the leadup to Pentecost. Consequently, over the next nine days, here on our blog, we will share readings and prayers to join with others from across the world in praying for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

We will also share reflections from different sisters focused on aspects of deepening in relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Today we ponder the meaning of the Acsension in our lives.

Today, Sarah-Jane shares her story of Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a beautiful grace on offer to all of us. As MGL Sisters, it is at the centre of our charism. Simply put, it is an invitation to experiencing the life-changing love of God in ever-deepening ways through the power of the Holy Spirit. People experience this grace in many different ways – some receive prayer specifically for it, and others have an experience of it at a totally unexpected time.

Indescribable Love

2019.20.Indescribable Love 160.2

One of my favourite ways to pray is to listen to music which ministers deeply to my heart. There are many songs which speak powerfully to me, but my favourite at this time is Love Like This, by Lauren Daigle. I think she has a profound gift to capture human experience and to express it in song.

The Gift of New Life

Mel and Willow 3 160

Recently, I had the joy of visiting some of my friends and their beautiful new baby girl named Willow (added bonus was that she was born on my birthday)! As I looked at her tiny two-week-old hands, I was greatly struck by the profound beauty of human life, of how she had been knit together in her mothers’ womb. As I listened to, and witnessed her parents pouring love upon her, I pondered that I can only imagine what it must be like to hold your baby in your arms, overcome by love and filled with dreams and excitement to see what will unfold in their life.

Peter Speaks - But I slept - Holy Thursday

Today is Holy Thursday. Today we sit with Peter as he comes to terms with falling asleep when Jesus asked him to stay awake an hour. Perhaps it is worth reflecting how we may also have fallen asleep.

Today we hear from an onlooker who reflects on seeing Jesus stripped of his clothes.

Today we hear from Simon of Cyrene and we place ourselves in his shoes, wondering how we may have reponded. What might his story reveal to us about our own life and journey with Jesus?

Through Holy Week, we will journey and reflect each day with a different 'face' of the Passion. Today, as we begin, we reflect with Pilate as he condemns Jesus to death.

Needing Balance??

2019.09.Need Balance.2

Something we often talk about as sisters is the importance of living a balanced life and what good self-care can look like. So much so, that recently we have been brainstorming some creative ideas just to remind ourselves of the endless possibilities. The truth is that we will all be able to live a much more fulfilling life overall if we frequently take the time to do things which nurture and refresh us. Here a just a few ideas that the sisters came up with…

Get excited for Lent

2019.06.Its Lent get excited.2

When Lent begins on Ash Wednesday each year, what happens inside of you? Do you secretly (or not so secretly) groan and lament the fact that a penitential season is beginning? Do you struggle through each day without the thing you have decided to give up, or to find time to do an extra thing you are choosing to take on? Or are you excited about the opportunity to deepen in your journey with Jesus?

Step out of the Nest

2019.05.Step out of the nest.2

Recently while at the redwood forest, the Melbourne sisters discovered a collection of branches that was arranged very much like a nest – the only difference being that it was on the ground rather than in the tree. We climbed in, sat there and then took some photos. It was as I was going away that it dawned in me that there were some nests in my life that Jesus is challenging me to step out of.

Live Like a Redwood

2019.04.Live Like a Redwood.2

Recently, the Melbourne sisters went on Mystery Tour #2. We ended up at a redwood forest near Warburton, about one hour from Melbourne. These trees are really, really tall, with some reaching a height of around 55 metres, and to walk among the almost 1,500 90-year-old redwoods is an awe-inspiring experience. Yet incredibly, these trees are mere babies in the redwood world, given that their life span can be up to 1800 years, and their height could reach around 100 metres.

Why sisters should swim.....

why sisters should swim 160x160Once, I was swimming at the local pool, meandering up and down the slow lane doing breast-stroke. Now I am definitely no Leisel Jones, and I certainly won’t be breaking world records any time soon (or any time in the future), but as I became aware of other people swimming past me, going much harder and faster, I began to see my journey up and down the slow lane as a parable for my life as an MGL sister. Here’s why (hmmm at this point it would be helpful to know that the three pillars of our MGL Life are Prayer, Sisterhood and Mission)……

Unwrapping the Gift of St Ignatius

iggy 160

Today (July 31) is the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola. He is one of the ten saints that we as MGL Sisters take as our patrons. He has left some timeless gifts to the church, no doubt inspiring many people down through the ages to discover God in new and life-changing ways. Here are just four of them – note to reader - this blog is a little longer than usual, but St Ignatius has so much to offer us that I felt it necessary to share each one of these gifts with you…..

Year of Youth Team Update #3

NT 160x160Our team of sisters travelling around our country for the Year of Youth, together with a team of young people are now in the Northern Territory. Here is a recap of their adventures so far in the Top End....

One of my favourite things to eat is hot, fresh, crunchy, white bread with lashings of butter, even more so when it is dipped in some creamy pumpkin soup on a cold winters day. It has a way of warming my insides, and is for me, a simple experience of joy.

vows renewaL 2018 160 X 160

Each year on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, we take the opportunity to privately renew our vows. For me, and I am sure for the other sisters, it is a beautiful opportunity to be renewed in consecration. It is a celebration of the life and love that living this way for Jesus brings. On this day, I recall the gift of the day of my Perpetual Vows. Here is the speech I made on the day; for me it is just as much true now as it was then.

I am sure you have many memories associated with amazing views – waterfalls, mountains, lakes, sunrises, oceans, beaches, rainforests, valleys, rock formations, rolling hills, bushy paths, Adoration…. Wait, did you say Adoration?? (or write it at least)!

Penola 2 160 x 160A few weeks ago, Melanie went to a Social Justice Retreat Day at Penola Catholic College in Melbourne. She presented on her work in the youth justice centre in Melbourne. It was a day of linking young people from the inside out, and from the outside in.

Beautiful things happen when you notice joy

joy berna 2 160x160

I thought it was a big call, even for a pope.

In the letter for the Year of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis is quoted as saying: "I want to say one word to you and this word is joy. Wherever consecrated people are, there is always joy!" One word to describe all the men and women throughout the world who have chosen to be set apart for God alone and he chooses joy? Why not love, or faith, or hope or peace?

Wednesday, 11 April 2018 00:00

Mel Nah 160x160

One of the ministries I am involved in as an MGL Sister is in the Youth Justice Centre in Melbourne. On one particular night, when we entered the unit for the youth group program, Tim (name changed) was with a group of other young men playing cards. We came and joined their group, and decided to play the ‘questions’ game at the same time as a way of encouraging interaction and conversation. This activity involves drawing a question from a box with wide and varied themes such as the three items you might take to a deserted island or which famous people you would invite to your dinner party.

sisters 160x160

One of our favourite things to do is to share about the gift of consecrated life. One of the invitations in the Year of Youth is for young people to courageously face the big questions in life - like Where is God calling me?

We want to invite all young women to come along to one of our Consecrated Life Weekends, to be held in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne throughout the year. These weekends are an opportunity for some quality time with God, and to share in and hear about the gift of consecrated life and our life as MGL Sisters.

People often ask how they can enter into Holy Week with Jesus. Perhaps one way is to consider the story of the Passion from the position of some of the 'characters' who are familiar to us. On this Wednesday of Holy Week, we meet Veronica and witness her loving response to Jesus in his journey to Calvary. .

02. I am the Vine 160x160

The other year we had two very large vines growing in our garden, overtaking our empty flowerbeds. It made me think about the Scripture "I am the vine, you are the branches… you will bear much fruit if you remain in my love" (Jn 15:5). I am no horticulturalist, but I suspect that the vines spread out so far because they try to make the greatest surface area to absorb the greatest amount of the sun’s rays... so they can bear the greatest amount of pumpkin!

03. Singing with all my heart

Have you ever found yourself singing along to a song in the company of another, only to find them looking at you rather strangely and trying to suppress their laughter? Some might experience this if they have a not so in-tune singing voice, but here I am thinking about those times when we catch someone singing along to a song with the words all wrong. Often these words we are singing may make little sense, but we are so used to singing them and are so sure they are the actual words that we continue to belt them out at the top of our lungs.

KK StClares 160It's very rare to find a class of 20 highschool girls asking their teacher to take them on an excursion to check out where and how the MGL Sisters live!

When we recently visited a year 9 class, the students asked if we live a normal life in a normal house. We commented by suggesting that they get a group of friends together and come over for a meal to see that our life is very normal. The teacher remarked with what we thought was a throw away comment saying, "maybe we can go to the sisters house for an excursion".

With animated and excited faces and chatter, the students asked their teacher if this excursion could happen next week! And................................ it happened!

Twenty year 9 students filed into our house with many questions. After question time, the students had a house tour, followed by lunch (pizza) and a competition in 'designing your own cupcakes'. We then invited the girls to chant morning prayer with us and surprisingly enough they seemed to enjoy it and kept a prayerful atmosphere. We then farwelled the girls with what they called 'the MGL sisters starter pack' consisting of rosary beads, mgl prayer card and how to say the rosary.

It was an awesome experience and not only did the students enjoy it, but the MGL Sisters loved it and loved having them visit!

bikeTherese, Julie and Judy spent some time in the Philippines visiting Julie's family and absolutely loved it! We also spent some time doing various outreaches with our Brothers for vocations promotion. The highlight (other than visiting Julie's family) was having the opportunity to stay with families in the slums surrounding the dump site in Manila!

The sisters will visit Sri Lanka in September.

Melanie makes her Perpetual Vows

IMG 90265Melanie Edwards recently made her perpetual vows and what a wonderful celebration it was! Many people came from Melbourne, Wollongong, Sydney and other places near and far.

Mel expressed that her day of vows was like her wedding day. She told the congregation that her groom Jesus is just in love with them as He is with her. She also said that her groom Jesus is just as interseted in them as He is in her.

Mel also shared a story about her 5 year old neice telling her own mother that she couldn't wait to Aunty Mel's 'special day' coz she wanted to see what Jesus looked like. Mel encouraged us all that we too need to become like a little child and ask Jesus to reveal Himself to us.

MGL Sisters XT3 Podcast on the "O Antiphons"

Xt3 logoOn December 17th we enter into the final stretch of our Advent preparation. In the 'Prayer of the Church' (Divine Office), at Evening Prayer, before the 'Magnificat', the great "O Antiphons" are sung.

Some people also add these Antiphons/prayers to their Rosary, or recite them before or after Mass or simply use them in their daily prayer in the lead up to Christmas day.

We invite you to use these "O Antiphons" in your prayer and in your preparation.

The MGL Sisters will guide you in a chant, reflection and short hymn everyday till the 23rd, enjoy and please share with your friends.
