Holy Thursday - Stay with Me

Stay With Me (Taizé) - YouTube

Today we enter into the Triduum – a most holy and solemn time. When we attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, we see the washing of the feet enacted, a powerful reminder of the humility of Jesus and the example of service to others he wanted to impart to the disciples, and indeed to us.

And there is the beautiful opportunity to keep watch with Jesus at the Altar of Repose at the conclusion of Mass. We know that the disciples fell asleep from sheer exhaustion when they were invited, even implored by Jesus to stay awake and keep watch. Perhaps we judge them and wonder why they would do such a thing, thinking, surely they could have kept each other awake – or perhaps we are all too aware that if we were in their shoes, we might well have fallen asleep too.

Praying at the Altar of Repose is a beautiful and powerful thing. There is something about the solemnity of being present with Jesus in this way, at this time that has a unique power to draw me deeply into silence and stillness. It is an invitation just to be – to be present with Jesus and in that to become present to myself, and to allow Jesus to be present with me. It is a precious opportunity to enter into the Triduum and to choose to journey through the passion with Jesus.

Perhaps the invitation and challenge of today, especially if you have never done so before, is to go to Holy Thursday Mass and to spend some time praying at the Altar of Repose. Allow yourself to be still and silent with Jesus, just being with him is enough. In the words of the Taize chant, the song we share with you today for prayer, take up the invitation offered by Jesus to

Stay with me.

Remain here with me.

Watch and pray.

Watch and pray.
