Vocation Views #2 - One Rule, Endless Possibilities - An Ode to the board game BLOKUS

I really love board games! My sisters could testify that when we were growing up, I would often ask them to play games with me, but the problem was that for them they were more like bored games.

Have you ever played Blokus? It is a strategy game that involves putting down as many of your coloured pieces onto the board as possible. Each new piece played must touch another piece of your colour, but the one rule is that only corner-to-corner contact is allowed (If you are a bit confused, hopefully the picture above will help).

What has this got to do with anything? Well I want to make a bold claim that if Blokus had been around in the time of Jesus, it may well have been one of his favourite games. I stake this claim because the catch phrase for Blokus is ‘One Rule, Endless Possibilities’. Is this not essentially what Jesus was saying to us when he commanded us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind and strength and our neighbor as ourselves.

So there is a common ‘rule’ as such for the way that Jesus asks us to live our lives, but just like every game of Blokus will produce a different looking board, every one of our lives will reflect this rich reality of love of God and neighbor in diverse ways.

As MGL Sisters, we have chosen to live the reality of the love of God and our neighbour as consecrated women. To live this way brings great joy, and it is a privilege for us to be able to share this gift of our lives with others. Perhaps it is worth asking yourself some questions…

  • What does the Blokus board of my life look like now, and what might it look like in the future?
  • Is consecrated life something the Lord is inviting me to consider?
  • Is consecrated life the way God invites me to love him and others?

Dream big with God, and when you are not too sure what those endless possibilities look like, remember that he has a plan for you that is far greater than you can ever imagine.
