Enjoying Summer #1 - Memories and Gifts

Over the month of January, many people have the opportunity to take a well-earned break and have some time to relax. One of my summer traditions is to spend time with my family at our holiday house about two hours south of Sydney. This year, I have particularly been looking forward to it as there was a long period of time when I thought the pandemic, closed borders and more might prevent this taking place.

There is something about being here that is truly relaxing and rejuvenating for me on so many levels. From relaxing on the beach with a good book, to jumping in waves and chasing nieces and nephews in the water, bike riding, card-making, family talent shows, bible colouring/musical singing nights, trips to the park and ice-cream shop, geocaching and more, my summer days are filled with many things which give me fresh energy. It is times like these that build treasured memories and traditions which I then have the opportunity to return to and build upon time and time again each time summer comes around. These things remind me of the gift of life, and they remind me to be grateful. They open me to seeing the goodness of God surrounding me in so many ways.

I think the same can be true for our relationship with God. When we have experiences of his love, presence, compassion and care, we are filled with life – his life. And just like we can return again to experiences of life with our family and friends so that these might deepen and develop, the same is also true of our experiences with God, for what we have experienced of him is but a drop in the ocean of his love. It can be worth spending some time in prayer asking God to bring to our mind experiences of his love which he may want to deepen in us some more.
