4th Sunday of Advent - LOVE

Christmas is a feast of love, a celebration of love, an invitation of love and to love, a reminder of the gift of love entering into the world like never before. Although it can never be simplified this much, reflecting on the readings on this 4th Sunday of Advent brings to mind two central things. The first is the invitation to receive this love, and the second is the call to respond by sharing this love with others.

  • Receive the gift of love.

The gift of love on offer to us is our salvation. God became man to save us and to draw us to himself in a far deeper way than ever before. The gift of love, of salvation is the gift that keeps giving. It is so unlike any other gift we can receive – because we can open it so many times and always discover something fresh and new – we can continually be blessed by it in unforeseen ways. The thing about this gift of love is that it also surprises us, blessing our lives in ways that we cannot imagine. It is not something that can be contained, rather it overflows with life and vitality.

  • Share the gift of love

In the second reading today, Paul talks about the gift of preaching the Good News, and the response to the psalm exhorts us to forever sing the goodness of the Lord. It is a fitting response to receiving the gift of love, of salvation, to be able to share it with others, to bear witness to the incredible gift that we have received. Sometimes this will be in explicit ways, and at other times this may be primarily through the witness of our lives.

Perhaps the invitation today is simply to soak in this love ourselves, then to ask God who he might want us to share it with.
