500 Million Mintie Moments

I am bit of a lolly muncher, and whilst I have lots of favourites, it is pretty hard to go past refreshing, chewy yummy Minties. And what’s more, their advertising slogan ‘it’s moments like these you need Minties,’ is also rather memorable. (In case you are wondering I do not work for Allen’s, the company who make Minties, but simply want to use them as an analogy).

So, I wonder if at some stage you have unwrapped a mintie or two or ten and cast a glance at the wrapper to see what unfortunate moment was depicted in which a mintie came to the rescue to make everything okay again. Some I recall are a man getting soaked by a broken hose, a nightmare trip to the barber and rolling down the alley at bowling with the ball stuck in your hand.

When we encounter difficult and challenging moments in our daily lives, admittedly more dire than being soaked by a hose, it is unlikely that Minties will have any lasting effect. This is because the secret to a life of joy is not a quick-fix Mintie cure, but an abiding relationship with Jesus who is present with us in every moment, both the more and less difficult.

Sounds obvious right, but it is easy to forget this, particularly when life seems to be going along rather well. We are used to calling on Jesus in the difficult Mintie-like moments, but we also need to call on him when we have no need of Minties. This is what it means to be in relationship with him, for every moment in our lives could fall under the slogan ‘It’s moments like these you need Jesus’.

If only one person consumed the 500 million Minties that are eaten every year, their teeth would probably fall out and they would suffer from sugar overload, but imagine what our lives would look like if we called on Jesus that many times each year. So next time you eat a Mintie, ask Jesus to help you grow in knowing you can abide in him always.
