The Corona Plot Twist

Have you ever had the experience of watching a movie as it nears the end, and being certain of how the story will finish – only to witness a major plot twist that changes everything. Suddenly the story continues and then ends in a way that you did not see coming. A range of emotions including surprise, joy, anger and confusion may follow.

If we imagine the story of our own lives to be a movie, it is fair to say that Covid-19 has brought about a plot twist that none of us would have envisaged a couple of months ago. There have been significant life changes, and there are likely many emotions that we are experiencing as we navigate this time. Whilst there are some commonalities in what we face, here are also significant differences in the ways we have been impacted by the restrictions and changes that are currently in place.

The thing about this plot twist is that we do not know for sure where it will lead us, the journey is unpredictable, but as followers of Jesus we can have confidence in his presence and his risen power with us to sustain and guide us as we travel rocky paths and uncharted waters.

I consider it a blessing at this time that I am still able to go into my ministry at Youth Justice - connecting with the young people and supporting them in their journey is something I am deeply grateful for, particularly in these times. I was there on Easer Sunday to share the gift of the resurrection with them.

This message of a plot twist is something I shared with them in relation to the Easter story. We know that Jesus continually told his disciples before he died that he had to suffer and after three days would rise again – but they did not really understand. So when he appeared to them after he had risen, the biggest plot change ever took place in their lives (and in the world as a whole). Even though he had given them clues, they did not really comprehend the enormity of what took place. I shared with the young people that God can work a miraculous and powerful plot twist in their lives as well. It was a message that spoke deeply to their hearts.

I believe that God would use the Covid-19 plot twist for good in each of our lives, even if that seems impossible to us right now. Perhaps the invitation is to pause and reflect, considering What is the plot twist that God is working in me at this time? and  How is God revealing his Risen presence to me in my daily life?
