Pilate Speaks - Monday of Holy Week

 2019.09.Pilate Speaks.1

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

He stands before me now

The crowds are shouting angrily,

I want to block it out.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

What did this man do?

Perverting the nation is their cry,

Saying I am the King of the Jews.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

I look into his face,

I see torment, pain and fear

And have to look away.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

I ask about their cry

‘Are you the King of the Jews?’, I ask

'If you say so', he replies.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

He seems innocent to me

I tell the crowds I find no charge,

There’s nothing I can see.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

I recall it’s Festival time

Which means I release a prisoner,

Regardless of his crime.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

This could be my out,

To let this man now go free,

Despite their angry shout.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

Claudia comes to speak,

Have nothing to do with this innocent man,

For I have had a dream.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

It’s Barabbas they want free,

That seems to make no sense of all,

He’ll surely break their peace.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

I’m stuck in this great mess,

I really don’t know what to do,

I simply must confess.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

Is he from Galilee,

Well, Herod is indeed nearby,

So he must go to he.

Chained and bound, afraid, alone

He walks away from me,

And I begin to wonder

Am I more chained and bound than he?
