Lord Jesus, send the fire of your Spirit into our hearts

Have you ever thought about how you would encapsulate and draw together your hopes, dreams and what matters to you in a symbol that expresses your identity in a profound way? Often, businesses do it through their logo, our Popes do it through their coat of arms, and we, as MGL Sisters do it through the cross and flame.

In our constitutions we say, ‘It is Jesus crucified, his heart on fire with love for us, who draws us into the mystery of his cross. This is the core of our charism, and our identity as MGL Sisters. It is this cross and living flame of love that urge us to mission.‘

It is when we make our initial vows that we begin to wear the cross and flame as a visual and tangible reminder of the gift of love poured out on the cross, which we not only long to deepen in ourselves but also desire to share with all those we encounter.

Each day we have the opportunity to say yes to this invitation again. One way we do this is through out MGL Prayer which we pray each day during Morning Prayer. It begins with the words, ‘Lord Jesus, send the fire of your Spirit into our hearts. So as we pray this, we are asking again and again to be open to this grace both for ourselves and for the world.

Often the young people I meet in youth justice ask if they can have my cross, telling me that they like it. Whilst I don’t hand it over to them, explaining that it is my ‘sister cross’, it does give me an opportunity to share with them about the profound meaning that it expresses.
