Childhood Christmas Memories

 SJ CHRISTMAS 2

Christmas is a very special time for our family. Our tradition was always staying at our Grandparents house, along with the rest of our family. On Christmas Eve we would go to the local park for a BBQ. The night included singing Christmas carols, taking a tour of the houses decorated in Christmas lights in the back of a fire truck, as well as waiting for Father Christmas to make a last minute visit. Grandpa loved decorating his house with Christmas lights, many of which he created himself. It was a family event putting up all the Christmas lights and taking them down again. One of my favourite traditions was a grandchild placing baby Jesus in the nativity set just before going to bed on Christmas Eve. It was always a special honour when it was my turn!

Christmas morning, we would eagerly wait for everyone to wake. Then we would race into the lounge room to see what Father Christmas and family members had given us. We went to Christmas Mass. From as young as I can remember, I knew Christmas was about the birth of Jesus. All the celebrating and gift giving was in honour of the gift God has given us through Jesus.

The rest of the day was spent around the table eating, playing games, talking and enjoying each other’s company. We ate typical Australian Christmas food consisting of roast turkey, ham, prawns, crab, salads, Christmas pudding with brandy custard and ice-cream, honey biscuits and many other home baked goods from Grandma. Our Christmas was filled with joy, hope, faith, love, and family.
