'O Emmanuel' - The 'O' Antiphons Day 7

2019.79.O Antiphons 7.Main Blog imageGod is with us – that is what Emmanuel means. This is the name that was revealed by Mary at the Annunciation. How beautiful that is when we really take some time to ponder it. God is close to us. We do not have a God who is distant and removed from us, but a God who is close, a God who became human to draw us nearer to him than we could possibly imagine.

Sometimes it can be tough to realise and experience just how close God is to us. He can seem so far away, and the truth that he is with us can feel like something we know in our heads but not our hearts. I once heard the analogy of the fingerprints of God as an invitation to remember just how ‘with us’ God really is. Each day we leave our own fingerprints in literally thousands of different places, often unseen and unrealised. Because God is ‘with us’ in every moment, we can imagine that he too leaves his fingerprints everywhere, longing for us to know how close he is.

As we celebrate the coming of the Saviour this Christmas, let us pray for the eyes of faith to see God’s fingerprints, that we may realise just how ‘with us’ God is in every moment of our lives.
