'O Root of Jesse' - The 'O' Antiphons Day 3

The Jewish people believed that the Messiah would come from the line of David, and Jesse was the father of David. In this way, we understand Jesus to be the fulfilment of this prophecy. Jesus is the shoot that stands as a signal for the nations. Jesus is the shoot before whom kings will fall silent. Jesus is the shoot whom people will beseech for deliverance without delay. Jesus is the promised shoot that brings new life, even in dry, lifeless and barren places where this seems improbable and impossible, both in our own lives and in the world around us.

In this antiphon, we beseech that the Lord to come without delay. Whilst we pray this in faith and hope, our experience may be that sometimes it seems as the Lord does delay. When this is our story, we are invited to have faith that the Lord has come and is tending our soil in preparation for shoots to arise in his time. Let us take confidence in the promise of the coming of our Saviour.
