Discernment Tip 3: Find a Guide

 2019.45.find a guide

“In God’s plan, every man and woman is meant to seek self-fulfilment, for every human life is called to some task by God”. Your vocation inspires you to bring out the best in yourself for the glory of God and the good of others (Christus Vivit 257)

Its not easy to know the direction you are meant to take in life. Its normal to find this daunting and Pope Francis acknowledges this when he compares this to the vital job of a helmsman keeping a ship going in the right direction. You need help to know how to follow what God is showing you through your life. You were never meant to do that discerning on your own.

It’s so important to have someone with whom you can talk it all out. When you try to put into words what you feel, think and pray about, it often becomes clearer in the telling. Find someone wise who to talk to about your decisions and dreams. This can be a spiritual director, a priest, religious, or anyone skilled in listening.

When you find someone you can trust, regularly tell them anything you can about what is important to you and what you think God might be doing with you. This is not easy, but helps you take your life seriously, and keep your focus on what really matters. We can depend on God to direct us, but it helps so much to find a guide to talk to along the way.

But he will show me a direction in life, for he is my Creator and I need to listen to his voice, so that, like clay in the hands of a potter, I can let myself be shaped and guided by him. Then I will become what I was meant to be, faithful to my own reality (Christus Vivit 256)
