Keep the Fire Burning: Isaiah's Burning Coals

2019.48.Keep the fire burning 4 Isaiah.main blog image

Just after Pentecost we began some blog posts about keeping the fire burning. These traced the story and experience of key people in scripture who had powerful experiences with fire. So far, we have reflected with Abraham, Moses and the wandering Israelites. Today, we turn our attention to Isaiah to see how his experience of being anointed with a coal upon his lips can inspire us in today’s world.

A coal upon my lips
To remove my sin and guilt
A fire in my heart
For it’s in you I am built.

A coal upon my lips
Here I am, send me
A fire in my heart
To set the people free

A coal upon my lips
To proclaim his glorious name
A fire in my heart
For I’ll never be the same

A coal upon my lips
To step forth every day
A fire in my heart
So that all may go your way

A coal upon my lips
To speak out hope and joy
A fire in my heart
That nothing can destroy

A coal upon my lips
To be strengthened in his might
A fire in my heart
To bear his precious light

So I do not know about you, but I was anointed and called into the mission of sharing the love of God through the experience of a burning coal being placed upon my lips – and to be honest I am glad I wasn’t because it sounds rather painful. Nevertheless, my call (and yours) to bear witness to the love and power of God is not less valid and reflecting on the story and call of Isaiah can remind us of this reality. This is not always easy, as I am sure you are aware, but with Isaiah may we be encouraged to unashamedly proclaim the name of the Lord in whatever places he sends us. (Check out the story of his call and anointing  in Isaiah 6 – you might even like to imagine yourself in his place)
