Where are you going?

Vocations Week 1

Whenever we travel somewhere new, we usually have to work out the best way to get there. If we are traveling overseas or interstate, we might catch a plane, if we are traveling within our own city, we might drive, catch a train or bus, or maybe even walk. These days, mobile phones with GPS or maps and public transport journey planners make it relatively easy for us.

Discerning our direction of travel in life can seem a little more complicated, but the reality is that we also have tools at our disposal to help us along the way. It is true that we might not hear a voice from our mobile phone telling us to turn right in 500 metres, but we can nevertheless find our way through simple things like prayer, talking to others and reading the wisdom of discernment gurus like St Ignatius (to name just a few).

So even though today marks the conclusion of National Vocations Awareness Week, far from letting it slip from our minds, we are invited to make openness to vocation a part of our everyday reality. Let’s keep our vocational GPS switched on and challenge ourselves to do something new, whether that be dedicating more time to prayer, spending time with some consecrated sisters to ask questions about their life or any other of a myriad of things.

After all, with the power of the Holy Spirit keeping our vocational GPS charged, we can walk forth confident that Jesus is right by our side.
