Crunchy White Bread with Lashings of Butter

 2019.38.Cruchy White Breadmain blog

“… we will have bread to offer that is warm from the oven of our own intimacy with God”.

One of my favourite things to eat is hot, fresh, crunchy, white bread with lashings of butter, even more so when it is dipped in some creamy pumpkin soup on a cold winters day. It has a way of warming my insides, and is for me, a simple experience of joy.

On my recent retreat, I was inspired to read a book called Strengthening the Soul of your Leadership, written by Ruth Haley Barton. She has many pearls of wisdom for those in leadership, but what I reflect on today, is something that is deeply relevant to us all, and hopefully you will see what this has to do with bread and soup.

She makes the point that it is important to be hungry ourselves for the sustenance that the bread of life brings, so that we can offer bread that is warm from the oven of our own intimacy with God to all we encounter. I think that what she is saying is that our own relationship with God can become an offering of crunchy white bread with lashings of butter in the lives of others. It can be and is a means to warm their insides and lead them to an encounter of joy in the Lord.

The challenge and invitation then is two-fold:

  1. To daily seek the bread of life for myself so that my own intimacy with God will deepen.
  2. To seek and pray for opportunities to share this bread with others
