Ever Deeper: The Gift of Retreats

We have recently returned from our mid-year retreat. It is always a privileged opportunity to have some quiet time away with the Lord. This time, we were fortunate to be at Point Lonsdale, enjoying the sunshine, scenic walks, beaches and more. There is also something powerful and encouraging about sharing the experience with other sisters, albeit in silence.

During the retreat, we undertook some Ignatian prayer exercises. One of them was what is known as Ignatius’ First Principle and Foundation. For Ignatius, this prayer is an encouragement to love God and live with God in every moment of our lives, and perhaps more importantly, to realise just how much God loves us in an ever-growing way.

Ignatius wrote:

Lord my God, when your love spilled over into creation you thought of me. I am from love, of love, for love. Let my heart, O God, always recognize, cherish and enjoy your goodness in all of creation. Direct all that is me toward your praise. Teach me reverence for every person, all things. Energise me in your service.

Lord God, may nothing ever distract me from your love; ……. May I never seek or choose to be other than what you intend or wish. AMEN

The graces on retreat were plentiful, but the invitation (and the challenge) is to allow them to penetrate my ordinary life. May each of us be inspired to turn anew to God each day, with a firm desire that nothing would distract us from this love.
