Towards Pentecost 8: The fruit of Gentleness

As we reflect on how we can grow closer to the Holy Spirit in the lead-up to Pentecost, we take time today to consider one of the fruits of the Spirit identified by Paul in Galatians. Here, Kat shares with us about gentleness.

When I learned to recite the fruit of the Spirit as a child, the list I learned finished: “…kindness, faithfulness, self-control and humility.”  There was no “gentleness” on that list at all!  As an adult, I have often pondered that the list I see most often used has “gentleness” rather than “humility,” and wondered exactly what the correlation between the two is, such that they can be used interchangeably.

In my experience of seeking to grow in “gentleness”, I’ve learned that only when I am humble can I be gentle.  What do I mean?  The more that I am aware and accepting of the truth of my own littleness, failures and weaknesses, and know God’s compassion towards me, the more I can give this to others.  What works best for me, then, is not so much the explicit attempt to be gentle at all times, but to consciously  and gratefully receive God’s gentleness to me.  Then it seems to come out sideways in the way that I treat both myself and others.

That makes sense, actually, because gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit, meaning that it grows in us accordingly as the Spirit has freedom to live and work within us.

Lord, please help me to open my heart more and more to the gift and working of your Spirit in me, so that I may become more and more like you in your gentleness and humility!

Novena Prayers – Day 8– Friday June 7

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth.

Daily Mass Readings

Acts 25:13-21

Jn 21:15-19

Father, as Pentecost approaches, open my heart to the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help me to also be attentive to the presence of your Holy Spirit already with me so that my connection may be deepened in a personal, life-changing way. AMEN
