God Friended Me?

 2019.17.God Friended Me.1

Recently, I saw a couple of episodes of a new(ish) show – God Friended Me! It centres around a man called Miles who is an atheist and a podcaster. He is purportedly sent a friend request on Facebook from an account that bears the name ‘God’. What follow is a series of friend suggestions – people in his home town of New York who need some kind of assistance. Although somewhat dubious as to the origin of this account, he responds and as a result those he helps avoid varying troubles. I have not seen too much of this show, but at this stage Miles is still steadfastly an atheist trying to work out what is happening as his life collides with his social media account in an unforeseen and unpredictable way.

I believe that God has definitely friended me – and you, not in an artificial Facebook kind of way but with a tangible, intimate and loving offer of connection and relationship. And just like Miles, we also receive friend suggestions from ‘God’ of people who he wants to reach in a myriad of ways. Of course these do not come through our social media accounts, but through the prompting of his Holy Spirit deep in our hearts. God wants to use us to share his love with his people and to witness to his presence in their lives.

And just like Miles had to confirm the friend suggestions on Facebook, we too have to say yes, and take a leap of faith into what can sometimes be the unknown. I think Eastertide is a great time to reflect on this, and to ask for the gift of boldness to step forth in faith like the early disciples. God has friended us, and when we say yes, remarkable things will take place.
