Get excited for Lent

 2019.06.Its Lent get excited.1

When Lent begins on Ash Wednesday each year, what happens inside of you? Do you secretly (or not so secretly) groan and lament the fact that a penitential season is beginning? Do you struggle through each day without the thing you have decided to give up, or to find time to do an extra thing you are choosing to take on? Or are you excited about the opportunity to deepen in your journey with Jesus? To be totally honest, I usually find the beginning of Lent a struggle and it seems to take me a while to get going.

Yet recently I was challenged as I read the words of Pope Francis’ Lenten message for 2019. In the opening lines, he quotes the first Preface of Lent, which exhorts us to be grateful for this joyful season through which we prepare to celebrate the great events of the Paschal Mystery which give us new life in Christ. So simple, yet exactly the reminder that I need to hear.

I think that it is probably true that we all need some of this new life that is on offer, that we are all hungering for ‘more’, that inside each of us there is a part that longs to be refreshed. I want to challenge you (and myself) at this point in Lent to consider where in your life you most need to be refreshed and renewed, and to spend some time inviting Jesus to fill it. Ask him to allow you to experience Lent as a season of joy as you wait with anticipation for his resurrection power. Get excited!
