Pursuing the Dream

 2019.03.Pursuing the Dream.2

Since returning from Panama WYD, I have been reflecting some more on the wisdom shared by Pope Francis. At the Final Mass, he encouraged all pilgrims to follow Jesus by “pursuing the dream for which he gave his life: loving with the same love with which he loved us.” Pursuing the dream of Jesus looks very different for each one of us, but there is great beauty in that reality because it means that each of us can use our gifts and strengths in unique ways.

Regular readers of this blog would likely know that I have a real passion for my ministry in the youth justice centre in Melbourne, and when I heard these words of Pope Francis, it was the young men and women I minister to there that I immediately thought of. For me, pursuing the dream of Jesus is about inviting these young people to see his love for them, to experience the love which he so ardently expressed on the cross. I desire to love them with the love of Jesus, and to invite them to allow it to transform their lives.

Many of them ask for rosary beads, and when I give them these, it is a graced opportunity to share with them about the power of the cross. As they place them around their necks, I remind them that the cross on the beads falls close to their heart, and that each time they see it, it can be a reminder that God is close, no matter what they are experiencing.

My prayer for them then, is that they too will become people who pursue the dream for which Jesus gave his life, and that they too can begin to witness of his love to those that they encounter.
